The National Opera and Ballet Theatre "Maria Bieșu" is a musical theater in Chișinău, founded in 1957. The National Opera and Ballet Theater of the Republic of Moldova "Maria Bieșu" is a musical theater in Chișinău, the capital of Moldova. It was founded in 1956 on the basis of the Moldovan Opera, Ballet and Drama Theater, which was in turn created in 1955 on the basis of the Moldovan Musical and Dramatic Theater. The first director of the theater (1956—1964) was the composer D. G. Gershfeld — the theater was opened on June 9, 1956 with the premiere of his opera "Grozovan". The first opera performance — "Grozovan" by Gershfeld took place in 1956, the first ballet — "The Fountain of Bakhchisaray" by Asaev — in 1957. In July 1957, the opera and ballet troupes of the theater became an independent collective. The theater has staged works by Moldovan composers: operas — "Aurelia" by Gershfeld (1959), "The Heart of Domnica" by Stârcea (1960, in the second edition "Heroic Ballad", 1970), ballets — "Dawn" by Zagorski (1960), "The Broken Sword" (1960), "Antonieta" by Tihotski (1962).
