This is one of the most famous theatres in Chișinău. It was founded on 11 September 1991. The theatre was created on the initiative of a group of actors, graduates of the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute in Moscow, led by Petru Vutcărеu.
Playwright Eugène Ionesco personally agreed that the new theatre bear his name — a deeply symbolic gesture. Director and actor Petru Vutcărеu was the theatre's first director and artistic director and currently serves as its director.
The new company, now under the new name "Eugène Ionesco", was temporarily based in Romania, in the town of Râmnicu Vâlcea, where the actors were provided with accommodation and a stage on which they could stage and present new productions. After 5 months of work in Vâlcea, the theatre undertook its first major tours of Romania's largest cities. During this period, the theatre, taking its first steps, won awards at various theatre festivals and recorded two broadcasts of its repertoire on Romanian television.
In the summer of 1991, the theatre returned to Chișinău. For a time the theatre was located in various places, but in February 2007, by government decision, the theatre "Eugène Ionesco" received its own premises — the building of the former "Moskva" cinema. National Theatre "Eugène Ionesco"
