Orheiul Vechi is a natural and historical complex near Orhei, where cliffs above the Răut River hide cave monasteries and traces of civilizations from the Dacians to the Golden Horde. Walk through a narrow passage carved in the rock beneath the bell tower and find yourself inside a living church hewn from limestone, then step out onto the open cliff edge with sweeping views of the river bend. The 12,000-hectare reserve includes an anthropology museum, cafes, and guesthouses in Butuceni village — easy to come for a day and stay for the night.
