The New Nemtsy Kickan Monastery is said to be the successor of the Nemtsy Monastery from the Carpathians of ancient Moldavia. During the reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the secularisation of monastic property and the ban on services in Church Slavonic caused discontent among the monks of the old Nemtsy Lavra.
The monastery was built over almost 50 years. The cathedral church in honour of the "Ascension of the Lord" and the bell tower, which are part of the monastic complex, were designed in 1864 by an architect from Saint Petersburg. At the beginning of the 20th century other buildings were erected: a refectory, a hospital, a stone kitchen, a two-storey cell block, and a 64-metre bell tower with five levels above the gate, which was once the tallest bell tower in Moldova. An oak alley with figures of novices carved into the tree trunks leads to the cathedral.
The monastery complex includes four churches: the Cathedral of the Resurrection of the Lord (summer), the Dormition Church (winter), and the Saint Nicholas and Holy Exaltation of the Cross churches.
