One of the oldest places of prayer retreat, located between the Dniester and Prut rivers, is the Vărzărești Monastery, whose founder was the boyar Stan Vărzar. This is mentioned in one of the decrees of Alexander Voivode (April 1399 - January 1432), dated April 25, 1420. Vărzărești Monastery
Despite the fact that only this date is mentioned in historical documents, the monastery was established long before the signing of this decree, as by the time of its issuance, it was already well known and served as a shelter for travelers.
The monastery is located 70 km from Chișinău, near the village of Vărzărești, Nisporeni district, and 32 km from the nearest railway station, Bucovăț.
The Vărzărești monastic complex is organized on the principles of simplicity and lightness. On a strong and massive foundation, the main church in the name of St. Demetrius rises, and in the northern part of the complex, there are cells that resemble ordinary houses. The architecture of the monastery corresponds to the traditional Moldovan style with elements
