The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is one of those churches that have stood for so long that it is impossible not only to name the exact date of construction; historians are not even sure which century it was built in. It is the oldest church in all of Moldova. Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God
Besides its unique age, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God has wall frescoes that can no longer be found anywhere else in the world. Its style is enchanting and captivating, because it was restored for the last time back in 1763, and since then nothing has changed.
These unique frescoes, which tourists, the residents of Moldova and guests from all corners of the earth, historians and archaeologists come to see, are not very certainly attributed to the period of the Horezu School. They depict people who did much for the church, who helped and patronised it. Among them are Grigore Alexandru Ghica, Metropolitan of Proilavia Daniil, Nicolae and Constantin Mavrocordat, as well as Grigore Clima and many others. Because the church is so old, over time it sank halfway underground.
There is a legend connected with this: the Tatars did eventually agree to the construction of one Orthodox church, but to deceive the peasants, they said the church must not be higher than a soldier on horseback. In the end, the peasants deceived the Tatars.
