About this place
The name "Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve" means Land of the Beeches, and this is no coincidence: the reserve is home to more than 680 different species of vascular plants. It is also worth noting that the territory of Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve is partly open to tourists, who can see everything with their own eyes.
Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve covers a vast territory of five and a half thousand hectares, and almost all of it is forest. The terrain is very diverse and differs from the usual landscape of this area. Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve features both mountainous relief and frequent steep slopes formed by ancient landslides. The altitude of the main part of Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve ranges from 140 metres to 400 metres above sea level. The Rădăuți River, which has a number of lakes, flows through Plaiul Fagului. It divides the territory roughly in half.
As already mentioned, the reserve's flora consists mostly of vascular plants, more than 150 species of pteridophytes, 48 species of mosses and 48 lichens. Few people know that 27 plant species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova. Beech, oak and hornbeam predominate in these areas, sometimes sessile oak, and very rarely one can see majestic centuries-old oaks. Because the forest in the Codri is often cut down, this is precisely why sessile oak is so rare and hornbeam has taken its place. At present, planned reforestation is taking place across the territory of Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve, avoiding soil disturbance and respecting all aspects of ecology. Let us take a look at the animal world: more than 211 species of fauna live in Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve. These include over 60 species of terrestrial invertebrates, 12 amphibians, 8 reptiles, 49 mammal species and 142 bird species. While walking through the territory, you may come across foxes, roe deer, badgers, wild boar, wildcats and pine martens.
Nowadays red deer and fallow deer are increasingly seen, which, according to scientists, is a sign of success. Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve is full of picturesque places and is the rarest natural treasure of Moldova!
